Well, I got good news, I got bad news.... we'll see what comes out and in what order.

I thought my lease expired in May, which was somewhat convenient for my new job, but I was mistaken. It actually expires in June, and it's the type of lease where you can't sublet and you're responsible for the rent if you move out early. Soooo, that means I get to commute from Richardson to Westlake for a full 2 months. That's gonna be about 3000 miles on the car and about $350 in gas if the price hovers around $3 a gallon (I need mid-grade nowadays).

I took some fantastic bridal portraits this weekend, and it was using a totally different approach than normal. I actually had both the camera and the flash on full manual control. Shutter, aperture, ISO, and flash out settings, all set without the camera making decisions. Unfortunately this isn't feasible for something like a wedding where every shot counts, as I had to shoot, analyze, adjust, and thennnnn reshoot -- adjusting flash output if I changed position, and adjusting shutter/aperture if a stray cloud drifted by.

Why do I go into details that nobody cares about? Here, just look at the pretty pictures:

And to wrap up.... as my current job comes to a close, there's hardly any work to do, and it's getting really boring.

I've settled on a job contract. Yay! I'm happy, they're happy, it's gonna be a good move.

In other news, would any body be interested in 6GB of CF cards? 2x 2GB and 2x 1GB, all Lexar Professional 80x. They currently retail for $60 and $30 each, respectively. Make me an offer!

Man, that was a hard email to write.

I've just pushed back again on my job-offer salary. I don't like asking for more as it's just not in my nature, but on the other hand I have the upper-hand for once:

  1. They need me and my experience with their new client.
  2. I have skills that they sorely lack.
  3. I have another job oppotunity, so this one isn't vital to me.

Put that all together, and for the first time I can push for top-dollar salary. I crafted my reply in as humble and logical a way as I could muster, and I think I did pretty well.

Now as I run through the possible scenarios, I have nothing to lose. Either they stick with their present offer, or offer more, but it is highly unlikely--nay, virtually impossible--they would retract the offer altogether.

Welcome to the business world, Bandman.

I was reading something this morning about political opinions and such, and it made me reminisce about childhood indoctrination.

Who among us in our earliest school years thought "pledge allegiance" was one word... "I plejuhleejense..."

And I wonder if today's children think "for which it stands" is a country in the middle east... "and to the republic Forwichistan..."

But besides the politics, I've long fought the battle between knowing and understanding. For instance, knowing is what you do when you recite the alphabet. Understanding is what happens when you realize that "ellemeno" is not one letter.

Unfortunately, the sad truth is that an embarassingly large proportion of the population doesn't bother with understanding, barely even scratching the surface of knowing. References to this phenomenon permeate our daily lives, but for a more amusing compilation see any of the myriad "overheard" forums, beginning with the one that started it all www.overheardinnewyork.com

Good day.

It's been a greuling few weeks, what with the overtime and no social life, but things are starting to turn. I'm really catching up on the work, and I have at least one job offer on the table while I'm waiting to hear from two more. My energy is up, my confidence is up, my creativity is up... hell, my stock is up!

One of the many things to which I can attribute my current happiness is, believe it or not, my new ipod earbuds. I know, sounds stupid, but I'm serious. Now that I've got some quality buds, I've been listening on my train commute, and compared to reading and staring out the window, I feel much more energized both when I arrive at work and when I get home. I also listen most of the day through. I haven't needed a chai yet this week, though I had one just for personal satisfaction today.

I wouldn't have thought it possible, but my earbuds are actually affecting my quality of life. Best 70 bucks I ever spent. Plus, I find that I'm rediscovering music that I though I knew inside and out, but the sound quality is so much clearer with these in-ear, noise-isolating, direct-brain-stimulus earbuds that it's all new again.

Which reminds me... Anyone got some Dave Matthews and Maroon 7 albums I can borrow? The tracks I have are poorly ripped. It was only a vague twinge in the highs previously, but now with the new buds it's grating how bad the sound quality is, especially in the drummer's cymbals.

Gee, hope the RIAA doesn't come after me now!

Oh, and lastly.... I got a shipment of movies thanks to a sale at half.com, $6 per DVD. I got Good Morning Vietnam, Sling Blade, Gangs of New York, Cold Mountain, and The Animatrix. Looks like my weekend is full up!
